"It’s not a choice. It’s a destiny."

Fifteen-year-old Cate takes weird, unusual and plain terrifying in her stride. Five years in witness protection will do that. It didn’t however prepare her for when everything and everyone surrounding her suddenly froze at the bus stop. All still like statues. Only she sees the teens appear out of thin air. One boy hoists the bus she’s waiting to board over his head, while the others disarm a bomb placed underneath it. When she confronts them the teens vanish. Literally vanish.

Intrigued why Cate wasn't frozen at the bus stop, the teens pursue her relentlessly. They arrive at Socrates Private School and all the teachers and the other students act like they've known them all forever– like they’ve always attended the school. Cate sees something different. She is adamant they are totally new to Socrates and have never set foot in the school before today. What's with that?

When Cate accidentally brings a dead cheerleader back to life, her connection to the secretive teens is revealed. They are Timesurfers who travel through time and battle the powerful dark forces intent on manipulating history. A reluctant Cate is forced into their brutal world. She must discover her magical powers, choose a side, and end an ancient war. That’s if, and it’s a pretty big if, she can survive the initiation trials. No pressure though.

EXCERPT

“If you’re rifling through my brain with your little Time-Jedi tricks, stop it.” At this rate she wouldn’t have a brain to rifle through, it was taking such a beating.

“I can’t read your mind, happy?”

She was light years away from happy. “How do you travel through time like that?”

“It’s a combination of magic and science. Your body dematerializes–”

“No! You look like you’ve stepped from one room to another.” She smoothed her hair and removed a few stands of grass. “I look like I’ve be pulled through a tornado.”

He chuckled as he plucked random plant matter from her hair. His broad shoulders blocked the sun, which outlined him with its silver glow. As his hand ran over her hair, tingles shimmered over her scalp.

She swatted his hand away. “I can do it.”

“I’ve been surfing for longer than you’ve been alive.” He dropped his hand. “It takes practice.”

“What, so now you’re a century old, immortal, magical time traveller who’s frozen forever at sixteen?”

“Whoa! Big leap there. I’m nineteen, but I’ve been Timesurfing since before I could walk. My mum, who is an immortal, hid out in a different time each week until I was five. She had a relationship that went bad.”

“Your mother’s an immortal?”

“Keep up. I’m off. Eve’s headed this way from cheer practice. ETA, two minutes.”

“But we’ve been gone for ages.”

“Perks of time travel. Spend as long as you want in my present—only lose a few minutes in your present. That’s my past.”

“Yeah, yeah, I got that. When you were talking to Naitanui before, who did you think I was?”

“The magic won’t let me say.” Austin’s impish grin frustrated her. He pushed all her buttons so effortlessly with his infectious boyish charm and the promise of an uncomplicated good time.

“You know I’m going to tell Eve everything?”

Austin shrugged. “It’s you risking the frontal lobotomy. Naitanui!” He flickered and disappeared.

RELEASE DAY PROMO POST: Crystallum by Laney McMann

25649108About the Book

Title: Crystallum
Author: Laney McMann
Genre: YA Fantasy

Kadence Sparrow wasn’t born a devil’s child—she was turned into one. Now, she’s hiding from the truth, and running for her life.

For years, Kade’s true nature has lurked behind an illusion, so when her dad gets another job transfer, she knows the drill: no close friends, no boyfriends, and most importantly: don’t expose what she is. Ever. Keeping secrets is easy. Lies are second nature. So is the loneliness—and the fear, but when the Shadows attack, and Kade meets Cole Spires, she could expose everything she’s trying to hide.

As one of the Celestial Children, Cole lives by an oath: defend the Ward, protect the Primordial race, guard the gateways, and stick to his own. Everything else is a distraction, and besides, he’s lost enough. Cole’s job is clear, and no one his age does it better. So, when he meets Kade in a club downtown, he assumes she just wants his attention. Most girls do, but Cole soon realizes … Kade isn’t like most girls.

The children of heaven and hell are living among us, fighting an age-old war. And falling for someone from the opposition is not an option. But a chance encounter between Kade and Cole will blur the rules, as Kade’s journey to keep her truth hidden catapults them together and into a web of lies, forcing her to not only face the demon inside her, but to answer the hardest question of all.

Which is thicker—blood or water?

Tell us about your day job.
In my day job, I’m a high school Technology Education teacher. Which means I do nothing with writing, except run a writer’s club once a month or so. I teach 9-12 graders practical physics (which sounds like an oxymoron, but itsn’t really), engineering, robotics, work skills, 3D modeling, architecture, drafting, and computer stuff. Depending on the year and what classes I have, anyway. I also run a gardening club and we play in the dirt sometimes. J

Which writers inspire you?
There are so many! Shakespeare and Austen are always at the top of my list. Tolkien is up there too. In the YA/MG world, I love the way that Lisa Ann Sandell’s words just flow, and I love Rick Riordan’s imagination. And…well, let’s just stop there. I love so many!

What is your writing process like?
My writing process is in flux. I am making “office” hours for myself after work, but in a general sense, I keep a writing journal with me all the time. I write notes to myself about things I’m working on or thinking about. When I have enough of an idea that I feel like I can start writing, I try to make sure and sit down and write out the main points. It’s a really basic outline that I go back and add to until its fully fleshed out. But I’m not married to it. If I write and end up somewhere else, I just adapt the outline to work. When I finish a draft, I go through and the first things I do for edits is a search through the document for words I know I use too many (that, just, etc) and then I sit down and try to read it through, looking for mistakes. Once I’ve got it as good as I think it can be, I send it to critters and see what they say. Then I start again!

What are you reading right now?
Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff

Do you have an author crush?
Neil Gaiman.

Quick questions:
Physical books or eBooks?
Physical Books, though I love my ereader too.
Coke or Pepsi?
Coke! Really, root beer, cause I don’t drink caffeine anymore.
Twitter or Facebook?
Both for different things? I like the immediate gratification of Twitter, but I like FB too!
Song you can’t get out of your head right now?
Well, I was doing fine until you asked that. Now Steampunk Revolution by Abney Park is back in my brain. Grrrr.
Sweet or salty?
Sweet.
Coffee or tea?
TEA.
Write on computer or notebook paper?
Blank. Even though I can’t write in a straight line.

BOOK REVIEW: Growing Up Neighbors by Frances Hoelsema

BLURB:

Little Deborah Harrington stared across the street the day the Michaels family moved in. Who was this family? Would she even like them?

Nicholas Michaels hated the fact he had to move away from everything and everyone in his life, but his feelings change when he meets the Harringtons. Deborah and Nicholas become the best of friends, and as the children grow up, their friendship deepens.

But then tragedy strikes. Will this cause them to part ways? Or will it perhaps make them realize they may have stronger feelings for one another before it's too late?

BOOK REVIEW: Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom

BLURB:

Everyone has secrets. Everyone is a secret.

Parker Grant is a junior in high school who loves to run, has great friends, and isn't afraid to speak her mind--especially when it comes to how stupid some people can be around a blind person like her. The only topic to avoid is how Parker feels about the boy who broke her heart in eighth grade... who has just transferred to her school. And as long as she can keep giving herself gold stars for every day she hasn't cried since her dad's death three months ago, she'll be just fine. Right?

Combining a fiercely engaging voice with true heart, debut author Eric Lindstrom's Not If I See You First sheds light on the metaphorical blind spots that are a part of life, whether you're visually impaired or not.

REVIEW BY: Arianna, age 12 years, 11 months

MAY CONTAIN SPOILER:

This book was blunt, honest and very good!

My favorite character is Faith because she is popular, but she doesn't let that get to her head. When her less than popular friends need her she is always there for them. This shows that she doesn't care what others think and she will not bend to others will.

My favorite part is when Parker explodes at school and lets all of her emotions out. This shows how strong she is after she holds it all in. Her friends are there to help her which is really nice and sweet. The moment they share makes me cry a bit, to be honest.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes strong-willed characters, a good book and a wonderful adventure!

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 13 and up.

This book's publishing date is December 1, 2015.

BOOK REVIEW: Hour of the Bees by Lindsay Eagar

BLURB:

What does it mean to be fully alive? Magic blends with reality in a stunning coming-of-age novel about a girl, a grandfather, wanderlust, and reclaiming your roots.

Things are only impossible if you stop to think about them….

While her friends are spending their summers having pool parties and sleepovers, twelve-year-old Carolina — Carol — is spending hers in the middle of the New Mexico desert, helping her parents move the grandfather she’s never met into a home for people with dementia. At first, Carol avoids prickly Grandpa Serge. But as the summer wears on and the heat bears down, Carol finds herself drawn to him, fascinated by the crazy stories he tells her about a healing tree, a green-glass lake, and the bees that will bring back the rain and end a hundred years of drought. As the thin line between magic and reality starts to blur, Carol must decide for herself what is possible — and what it means to be true to her roots. Readers who dream that there’s something more out there will be enchanted by this captivating novel of family, renewal, and discovering the wonder of the world.

REVIEW BY: Michaela, age 11 years, 5 months

MAY CONTAIN SPOILER:

This book was pretty good, although I don't have a favorite character or part.

I recommend this book to people who like good magical and heart warming stories. This would also be a great book for girls coming into their preteen years as it reminded me of what my friends and I go through.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 9 to 13.

This book's publishing date is March 8, 2016.

BOOK REVIEW: Gamer Girl by Mari Mancusi

BLURB:

Maddy's life couldn't get much worse. Her parents split and now she's stuck in a small town and at a new school. Most of the time, she retreats into her manga art, but when she gets into the Fields of Fantasy online computer game, she knows she's found the one place she can be herself. In the game world, Maddy can be the beautiful and magical Allora and have a virtually perfect life. And she even finds a little romance. But can Maddy escape her real-life problems altogether, or will she have to find a way to make her real world just as amazing as her virtual one?

REVIEW BY: Angel, age 13 years

MAY CONTAIN SPOILER:

This book was a truly relatable read with a twisty fantasy end. Mari Mancusi took this novel to an unexpected ending that I enjoyed!

This book was just as great as her other books, so I don't want to spoil it for you.

My favorite character is Maddy because I can relate to her in many ways. My favorite part is when Chad and Maddy are at the contest.

I recommend this book to girls that seem to hide who they really are. Just a word of advice, you don't need to hide your true self! You are special in every way, just remember that!

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 and up.

Title: Tutankhamen Speaks (The Quest Books Companion to Sons of the Sphinx) | Author: Cheryl Carpinello | Publication Date: January, 2014 | Publisher: Beyond Today Educator | Pages: 80 | Recommended Age: 10+

Book Description: 2014 EVVY Finalist & Merit Award for Historical Fiction from Colorado Independent Publishers Assoc. Long ago the old texts of ancient Egypt alluded to scrolls in which King Tut spoke to the people from beyond the tomb. Many archeologists put this down to an incorrect translation of the ancient Egyptian texts. Others swore to the accuracy of the translation. None of that mattered because the scrolls in question could not be found. Scholars labeled it a hoax, something that never existed. It was ludicrous to imagine someone speaking from the grave. They were wrong on both accounts.
